Sometimes only a sentimental gift will do, and in my opinion one of those occasions is when selecting a retirement gift.
Retirement gifts should signify the feelings of fondness, respect, appreciation and admiration the gift giver holds for the retiree.
Retirement from any career but particularly one in a caring field such as medicine or teaching where those retiring leave an empty space that no other can really fill as they have brought to that job their own personality and ways of dealing and doing ,that are their own personal brand or style that their departure leaves a void that cannot be filled by anyone else.
One example of such a person would be a teacher, teachers impact on us and our children in special ways and at special times, they have been there for our children when we could not. They have imparted learning and knowledge, fostered inspiration, and encouraged achievement, curiosity, tenacity and understanding in our children. With that forceful and adamant patience only teachers seem to posses, but always with kindness and an open loving heart. For the retirement of a teacher a sentimental gift is particularly apt as it is an occasion of great sentiment, a time full of memories, of days gone by, looking back over years shared with students and fellow teachers recalling countless first days of school and just as many graduations, thousands of morning assemblies,Christmas pageants and parent teacher meetings, many events living large still in the eye of memory some happy, some sad, some stressful, even some comic all have come and gone.
All those years given so unselfishly should not pass unremarked or unrewarded the best retirement gift that any teacher can receive should be a very sentimental gift if possible an over the top bring tears to the eyes sentimental gift.
Even if that special teacher that made a difference in your life is now many years retired it's never too late to say thank you, it is never too late to show your appreciation.
